Essential Oils and Bipolar disorder

After talking to many people discovered Bipolar disorder is a very common disorder so decided to take up some time to do some research on this condition to see if our essential oils could help and was very interesting to what I have learned.

Bipolar disorder (aka as manic depression) these are severe moods swings very up and down with periods of high energy and uncontrollable (manic) to low with lethargy, sadness or hopelessness (depression) These moods are more severe than the normal up and downs of everyday life.

Symptoms can begin from from late teenage and early adult life (15-25) and can effect female aswell as males. There has been research where this has run in the family but the condition itselg is known to be long-term illness but with having a proper diet and exercise they are living comfortable and productive lives.

Symptoms of Bipolar varies from person to person.

In most people that have bipolar disorder, there is no clear cause for the manic or depression episodes they encounter.

The following may trigger a manic episode in people who are suffering with bipolar disorder.

  1. Life changes

  2. Medications such as antidepressants or steroids

  3. Periods of sleeplessness

  4. Recreation drug use symptoms

The manic phase may last from days to months. It can include the following symptoms

  1. Easily distracted

  2. Little need for sleep

  3. Poor judgement

  4. Reckless behaviour and lack of self control

  5. Binge eating, drinking and /or drug use

  6. Sex with many partners

  7. Spending Sprees

  8. Very excitable mood

  9. Hyperactive

  10. Increased energy

  11. Racing thoughts

  12. Talking a lot

  13. Very high self esteem ( false beliefs about themselves or abilities)

  14. Very involved in activities

  15. Agitated or irritated and gets very upset

These symptoms of mania occur with bipolar disorder, in people with bipolar disorder the symptoms of mania are similar but less intense. The depressed phase of both types of bipolar can include the following symptoms.

  1. Daily low mood or sadness

  2. Lack of concentration, remembering or making decisions

  3. Eating problems – loss of appetite and weightloss – overeating and weight gain

  4. Fatigue or lack of energy

  5. Feeling of worthlessness, hopelessness or guillt

  6. Loss of pleaseure in activities they once enjoyed

  7. Loss of self esteem

  8. Thoughts of death and suicide

  9. Trouble getting to sleep or sleeping too much

  10. Pulling away from family and friends or activities they used to enjoy

Causes and Risk Factors

Bipolar disorder has many different cause including, hormonal imbalance, genetics, neurotransmitter imbalance, changes to the brain (either due to injury or other factors), stress, abuse, as well a traumatic loss can also contribute to the development of Bi-polar disorder. Additional emotional, psychological, or health issues can make the diagnosis of the disorder difficult. Conditions that commonly occur with Bi-polar disorder include anxiety, ADD/ADHD, addiction or substance abuse, heart disease, thyroid disease, and obesity.

Suggested oils to use that may help:

  1. Frankincense,

  2. Lavender

  3. Vetiver,

  4. Melissa,

The fundamentally most important factor is that you need to trust the brand of oils you use especially if you go down the internal route and even when you apply topically as different brands you do different ways of dilution. I will only ever use natural pure Therapeutic Grade and 100% natural.

  1. Frankincense.Frankincense is known for everything. I am starting to use it more and more but it seems to work with my body beyond my understanding. Frankincense has inadvertently helped aid me with my sleep. I apply it topically. Though Calming Blend helps calm me down and has helped with the peacefulness of sleep. Frankincense has really helped with the quality or depth of sleep. I notice that I recall my dreams, which is commonly theorized to occur during REM Sleep.

  2. Lavender. Diffuse this and put it on the bottom of my feet. Sleep is important for all aspects of health including mental. first thing to get some sense of mind back is to get good sleep. Oils help but make sure your biological rhythms are Focus Blend. What you eat, when you eat, how much exercise, when you exercise, these are all factors for sleep in addition to using your oils.

  3. Elevation.Though I don’t personally diffuse this. There were times my family members would diffuse this perhaps because of the Melissa inside and they have observed differences.

  4. Basic Vitality Supplements (LLV) Pack– Though not an oil but an excellent (…) product (which contains EOs such as Frankincense) The Omega Fatty Acids which are emulsified with its advanced delivery system is great for your brain health. The Alpha CRS+ has great ingredients such as oppa Monierri which helps with cognitve function. The Microplex VMz is a highest nutrient/vitamin supplement which is in the form of a whole food complex which is combined with an enzyme delivery system. Your body and brain needs nutrients.

Proper nutritional balance – Along with healthy eating habits use the Basic Vitality Supplements (LLV).

Clarify and focus – Use inhalation of Grounding Blend aka Balnce, Frankincense, or Vetiver. Carry Grounding Blend Balance at all times, apply to wrists, back of neck and/or inhale.

Lift and energize – Use Elevation topically and/or inhale.

Stress relief- Melissa on the upper lip and back of the neck is recommended. Also consider inhalation of Lavender. Use these same oils with a foot massage. Inhalation can be by diffusing, cup and inhale, or just inhaling directly from the bottle for emergency situations.

Rest and sleep – Lavender diffused or the bottom of the feet. Also other Suggested blends to use to help:

Can be used Topically, Internally or Aromatically

  1. 1 drop of Rose

  2. 1 drop of Orange

  3. 3 drops of sandalwood

Can be used Topically, Internally or Aromatically

  1. 3 drops of Bergamot

  2. 2 drops of Clary Sage

Can be used Topically, Internally or Aromatically

  1. 1 drop of ylang ylang

  2. 1 drop of lavendar

  3. 3 drops of grapefruit

Can be used Topically, Internally or Aromatically

  1. 2 drops of Frankincese

  2. 1 drop of lemon

  3. 2 drops of jasmin or neroli

Directions on how to use the oil blends

Mix all oils together in a glass bottle and shake well Diffuser blends:

Use the required amounts of oils following the specific guidelines from the manufacturer Inhalation:

Use your desired recipe and rub 1-2 drops on your hands and inhale. You can also inhale directly from a bottle, but be aware that oxygen can affect the oils, so only keep them open to the air for short periods of time. Bath Oil/Salts:

Add about 15 drops of your chosen recipe in your bath. Mix well and use normally. For bath salts, add 10-15 drops to 1/4 cup of baking soda or Epsom salts and allow to sit overnight, add to your bath and enjoy. Massage Oil:

Take 8 drops of your recipe and mix it with 20ml of carrier oil Air Freshener:

Fill a spray bottle with either 1.5 ounces of distilled water and or 3 ounces of distilled water. Then, add 30-40 drops of your chosen recipe. The aroma can change after the air freshener has had time to sit so it is best to make in small batches and use within 48 hours. Shake the bottle once before each use. Spray lightly in the chosen room. Be careful not to allow the air freshener mist to fall on your furniture, as some oils may stain
